a crater 50,000 years old
Welcome to Calderón Hondo — one of the best-preserved volcanic craters in the Canary Islands. Formed around 50,000 years ago, it rises gently from the island’s north coast, offering breathtaking views across miles of rugged lava fields. It’s wild, raw, and otherworldly — the perfect backdrop for a Roarsome photoshoot.
Today, the crater remains peaceful — a deep, rust-red bowl carved into the earth, surrounded by swirling winds, sprawling skies and a powerful silence, broken only by the footsteps of goats.
The route to the top
A sun-baked stone pathway winds its way through the lava fields, leading to the top.
As we hiked to the summit, we imagined that the volcano was alive. A sleeping giant who might wake up at any instant. Nature's power brought to life through a child's eyes. The kids could feel the energy of the place and their sense of awe & wonder grew with every step.
As we reached the summit, golden light spilled across the crater walls. The bright colours of our kids puffers, and the fearless joy of outdoor play all came together in a moment that defines Roarsome completely.

- Start from the dusty track outside Lajares
- Follow the marked SL-FV 2 trail to the rim (it takes about 30–45 minutes)
- Bring water, sunscreen, and your sense of wonder
- And when you reach the top… take a moment to breathe it all in
